Arrange your space to be cosy and comfortable
|
SMALL spaces don't have to be cramped, cluttered or lacking the basic attributes of good design. With a little care and attention you can arrange your space to be extremely cosy, comfortable and great for entertaining.
1. Use track lighting aimed at walls to free up floor space and create an expansive feeling. Tip: Install lighting inside closets so you can see what you have, doing this will make your world easier to maintain and offer a feeling of added space.
2. Remember, the light through the windows (especially clean windows) reflects in rooms at different times of the day. Arrange your furniture according to the light; this will help keep rooms bright.
3. Shoes have a way of piling up on each other into a giant mess. They become eyesores and take up space. The best way to arrange them is in a shoe organizer designed to hang over the door. This will clear up closet floors for other items.
4. Some designers claim that dark colours can make a small space seem even smaller, while pale walls and a white ceiling keep a room bright. You can indulge your love of intense colours through accessories and fabrics, rather than wall colour. Painting one wall of the room an accent colour can make the space seem larger; if the room is all white, pick a pale shade of blue, green, pink, or yellow.
5. Other designers say that this is a myth and that it is not the colour that makes a room look small, it's the contrast. If a person opts for a dark colour, the eye jumps from one area to another and causes the room to look small. Therefore, you can use dark colours but keep the contrast low, take the wall colour onto the ceiling or on the ceiling use a shade that is two or three shades lighter than the walls.
6. Intense colours and large-scale patterns on the floor and ceiling can make your small space seem even smaller. A floor covering in a solid colour and pattern will open up the floor plane.
7. Avoid area rugs. Keep the floors as clean and open as possible. This concept also works when creating a spacious feeling for multiple rooms. Having your floors all one material will help rooms flow into each other and create a larger space.
8. Organization, especially in a small space, is key. Make your own chalkboard or magnet board for notes. Use good quality specialized paints available at most paint stores. Apply the paint directly to a wall, door or piece of hardboard that can be attached to the wall. If wood is used, be sure to seal it with a primer before painting.
9. Plants liven up any space, especially a small one, find space for plants, even if it's on the wall.
10. Rotate objects so you only have a few special things on view at any given time. Doing this will help a small space appear orderly without becoming plain or impersonal.
11. Reduce the number of focal points in every room. If possible hang the television above the fireplace. Move a pair of twin beds to the same wall. Place a defining accessory in the kitchen eating area. Change the bathroom vanity to a stand-alone cabinet with an artistic sink.
12. Purchase a set of Director's chairs. These are ideal for small areas as they fold up fast to create instant space. 13. Shoji screens are a great way to visually divide space. Check out the different styles available, eventually you will find a set that matches your decor.
14. No room for the "bogey man". Under-the-bed boxes are a great place to store gift-wrapping supplies, out-of-season clothes, baby books, and memorabilia you don't need access to every day. You can also fill luggage with out-of-season clothes and hide (I mean tuck) it under the bed.
15. Put dry goods such as pastas, cereals, and rice in labelled, stackable plastic containers to create more shelf room and easier accessibility.
