Renovation -
French Colonial

Question --- I have a great Colonial home and have really enjoyed decorating it. However, for some reason, I'm still stuck with white in the bedroom. I love the French Country look of yellow and blue, but don't know where to start. Please help.

Consider this -- French Country is a wonderful style to choose for your bedroom. You can make it romantic, fresh and sunny all at the same time. Even though you have both colors and style in mind, it is often a challenge to move to the next level and actually start painting. I would begin with the bed linens, and look for traditional toile designs for a quilt or duvet cover and pillow shams. Toile themes are reminiscent of the French Countryside a few centuries ago, and include farm animals, or country and courting scenes from that time. The signature design is printed in blue, red, black or green against a cream or white background. Use white cotton sheets with a ruffle or touch of lace. This style enjoys simple contrasts; wood beams against white plaster ceilings, rustic furniture upholstered in familiar patterns, gingham, stripes and toile.

Paint your ceiling a golden yellow. Add some charm by bringing the ceiling color part way down the walls, tape off a border or straight line and paint the lower walls lavender (blue with a little purple in it), or the red or green of your chosen toile pattern. The wall color can be broken up with a paint technique called striČ. The lavender paint is mixed with a glaze giving you a longer drying time in which to work. Pull a painter's comb or a hard bristle brush through the wet glaze straight down from ceiling to floor to create lines that will resemble fabric weave. A cotton area rug will provide warmth underfoot. Shutters or wood blinds at the window can be framed by country-style curtain panels.
