HE Washing Machines

A recent study performed on behalf of Sunlight has found that many consumers may be unaware of the potential damage that could occur to high efficient (HE) laundry washing machines. Twenty-four per cent of Canadians are currently using an HE machine, though only 35 per cent of consumers are aware that these machines require HE-specific detergents.

When a regular detergent is used in an HE washing machine, the excess suds created can sink down and cause an air-lock in the washing machine pump. "Using regular detergent will likely result in washer errors, longer cycle times, and reduced rinsing performance," said Warrington Ellacott, Senior Marketing Manager for Maytag Canada. "It may also result in component failures and noticeable mould or mildew."

When purchasing laundry detergent, HE machine owners simply need to look for the HE symbol to ensure proper operation. Always use the amount of detergent specified by the manufacturer. Machines such as Maytag incorporate a suds lock recovery program to help deal with excess suds, as well as a Clean Washer Cycle, which removes any excess detergent or foreign matter from the drum and loading areas with a hot water/bleach mixture. Cycles such as these should be used once a month to maintain your washer's performance.
